This 37-year-old patient wished to treat the entirety of the thinning areas in a single session. Considering the extent of the baldness, present in both the anterior and posterior areas, I recommended him to follow an approach consisting of two distinct phases : a first intervention, aimed at collecting as many grafts as possible, in order to reconstruct the frontal and medial areas; a second session, with the aim of covering the vertex.
In April 2018, we performed the first FUE surgery, extracting and grafting 4261 grafts, including several hundred grafts taken from the beard and used to increase density in the midscalp. Photographs taken at the clinic 6 and 8 months after surgery already show a very satisfactory image change.
In January 2019 we completed the second FUE session – 2065 grafts taken exclusively from the scalp and used to cover the vertex. Also in this case the improvement is manifest and we can therefore speak of a total reconstruction, as can be appreciated in the photographs sent later by the patient.
Regarding the management of the donor area, it is interesting to underline the extraction model adopted during the second FUE session. As can be seen in the relevant photographs, I finished the extractions of the follicular units in a progressive manner, trying to get as close as possible to the recipient area. I tend to take this approach especially when the patient is undergoing a second (or additional) FUE session. In fact, this method allows me to avoid the so-called “fringe”, i.e. a section of the scalp between the donor area and the recipient area that would otherwise maintain its original density, resembling a “halo” around the skull, which is often very unattractive, especially when the patient has very short hair.
DETAILS OF THE SURGERIES
1st Operation – April 2018
✓ 4261 grafts
✓Donor area : scalp and beard
✓Receiving area : Anterior line, frontal and medial area
✓ Selection and extraction of follicular units performed with the WAW system, conceived and designed by Dr. Devroye and now widely used in the field of FUE. It consists of a very precise pedal to control the movement of the punch, also designed by the Doctor. The advantage of the WAW system is that it substantially reduces the number of damaged hairs or hairs undergoing transection, thus increasing the quality of the procedure. The system is currently used by a hundred surgeons worldwide.
